Why VMS Systems Are Vital for Managing the Contingent Workforce and Scaling Direct Sourcing Recruitment

In today’s fast-moving talent market, companies are increasingly relying on contingent workers—freelancers, contractors, consultants, and gig professionals—to meet project-based demands and fill critical skill gaps. Managing this flexible workforce requires more than spreadsheets and email chains. That’s where a Vendor Management System (VMS) comes into play.
A VMS system is a centralized platform that streamlines the way organizations manage their contingent workforce, engage staffing vendors, and ensure compliance. It plays a crucial role in driving efficiency, reducing costs, and enabling smarter hiring decisions—especially when paired with direct sourcing recruitment strategies.
What Is a VMS System?
A VMS system is software designed to manage every step of the external workforce lifecycle, from vendor onboarding and job requisitions to time tracking, invoicing, and performance evaluation. It provides a transparent view of your entire contingent workforce operation—whether you’re working with multiple vendors or directly sourcing your talent.
A good VMS system offers:
Centralized vendor and worker database
Real-time performance analytics
Automated workflows for approvals and invoicing
Integrated compliance and audit tracking
Role-based access for procurement, HR, and hiring managers
This kind of visibility is crucial in industries like IT, healthcare, manufacturing, and logistics where contingent labor forms a large part of the workforce.
Managing the VMS Contingent Workforce
The VMS contingent workforce refers to all temporary or non-payroll workers who are managed through a Vendor Management System. By consolidating all vendor and talent data into one dashboard, companies can quickly track labor costs, monitor compliance, and make strategic sourcing decisions.
Benefits include:
Improved visibility: Know who’s working, where, and at what cost.
Compliance assurance: Ensure vendors and workers meet legal and policy requirements.
Cost control: Avoid overbilling and negotiate better vendor terms.
Faster onboarding: Automate paperwork and approval flows.
A VMS system acts as a bridge between procurement, HR, and staffing vendors—making sure everyone is aligned and accountable.
Powering Direct Sourcing Recruitment with a VMS
Direct sourcing recruitment is the practice of leveraging your company’s brand and internal tools to source and engage contingent talent—without third-party staffing agencies. This model reduces cost per hire and gives you more control over candidate quality.
When integrated with a VMS system, direct sourcing becomes even more powerful. You can:
Build and maintain a private talent pool
Automatically match requisitions with pre-vetted candidates
Track direct sourcing performance alongside vendor-sourced hires
Easily switch between sourcing channels based on cost and availability
In essence, your VMS system becomes the control center for both vendor-led and direct sourcing recruitment.
Why This Matters Now
As businesses face uncertain markets and evolving workforce models, agility is key. Companies need scalable solutions to manage hybrid workforces that include full-time employees, freelancers, and everything in between.
Investing in a VMS system enables you to:
Scale contingent hiring without administrative chaos
Increase transparency and reduce compliance risks
Leverage direct sourcing to cut costs and improve hiring speed
Final Thoughts
Managing a modern workforce requires modern tools. A VMS contingent workforce strategy supported by a reliable VMS system and empowered by direct sourcing recruitment can give your organization the edge in today’s competitive hiring landscape.
Whether you're managing thousands of contractors or just starting to explore direct sourcing, the right VMS software can streamline operations, save time, and boost ROI.

🎄💾🗓️ Day 11: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The SEL 840A🎄💾🗓️
Systems Engineering Laboratories (SEL) introduced the SEL 840A in 1965. This is a deep cut folks, buckle in. It was designed as a high-performance, 24-bit general-purpose digital computer, particularly well-suited for scientific and industrial real-time applications.
Notable for using silicon monolithic integrated circuits and a modular architecture. Supported advanced computation with features like concurrent floating-point arithmetic via an optional Extended Arithmetic Unit (EAU), which allowed independent arithmetic processing in single or double precision. With a core memory cycle time of 1.75 microseconds and a capacity of up to 32,768 directly addressable words, the SEL 840A had impressive computational speed and versatility for its time.
Its instruction set covered arithmetic operations, branching, and program control. The computer had fairly robust I/O capabilities, supporting up to 128 input/output units and optional block transfer control for high-speed data movement. SEL 840A had real-time applications, such as data acquisition, industrial automation, and control systems, with features like multi-level priority interrupts and a real-time clock with millisecond resolution.
Software support included a FORTRAN IV compiler, mnemonic assembler, and a library of scientific subroutines, making it accessible for scientific and engineering use. The operator’s console provided immediate access to registers, control functions, and user interaction! Designed to be maintained, its modular design had serviceability you do often not see today, with swing-out circuit pages and accessible test points.
And here's a personal… personal computer history from Adafruit team member, Dan…
== The first computer I used was an SEL-840A, PDF:
I learned Fortran on it in eight grade, in 1970. It was at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where my parents worked, and was used to take data from cyclotron experiments and perform calculations. I later patched the Fortran compiler on it to take single-quoted strings, like 'HELLO', in Fortran FORMAT statements, instead of having to use Hollerith counts, like 5HHELLO.
In 1971-1972, in high school, I used a PDP-10 (model KA10) timesharing system, run by BOCES LIRICS on Long Island, NY, while we were there for one year on an exchange.
This is the front panel of the actual computer I used. I worked at the computer center in the summer. I know the fellow in the picture: he was an older high school student at the time.
The first "personal" computers I used were Xerox Alto, Xerox Dorado, Xerox Dandelion (Xerox Star 8010), Apple Lisa, and Apple Mac, and an original IBM PC. Later I used DEC VAXstations.
Dan kinda wins the first computer contest if there was one… Have first computer memories? Post’em up in the comments, or post yours on socialz’ and tag them #firstcomputer #retrocomputing – See you back here tomorrow!

It’s a stark change from a little over a decade ago, when Facebook bought up Instagram for only $1.2B, following it up by paying $15B for WhatsApp two years later. At the time, these acquisitions were some of the largest in tech history and marked the beginning of an era where lightweight software publishers were considered the industry’s future—in total, Instagram had only 13 employees at the time it was purchased, Whatsapp had only 55, and neither company had much of a physical presence beyond some office space and programmers’ workstations. Today, Facebook (now Meta) has spent $15.2B on capital expenditures in the first half of 2024 alone, much of it on massive arrays of computing infrastructure to support the company’s Llama brand of AI models. So far, the AI boom has been more hardware-intensive than any tech boom in history, and that is rapidly boosting construction and investment within the United States.
reminiscent of the first dot com boom and its investment in cables, although that was peanuts compared to this

NASA and Italian Space Agency test future lunar navigation technology
As the Artemis campaign leads humanity to the moon and eventually Mars, NASA is refining its state-of-the-art navigation and positioning technologies to guide a new era of lunar exploration.
A technology demonstration helping pave the way for these developments is the Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE) payload, a joint effort between NASA and the Italian Space Agency to demonstrate the viability of using existing GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signals for positioning, navigation, and timing on the moon.
During its voyage on an upcoming delivery to the moon as part of NASA's CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative, LuGRE would demonstrate acquiring and tracking signals from both the U.S. GPS and European Union Galileo GNSS constellations during transit to the moon, during lunar orbit, and finally for up to two weeks on the lunar surface itself.
The LuGRE payload is one of the first demonstrations of GNSS signal reception and navigation on and around the lunar surface, an important milestone for how lunar missions will access navigation and positioning technology.
If successful, LuGRE would demonstrate that spacecraft can use signals from existing GNSS satellites at lunar distances, reducing their reliance on ground-based stations on the Earth for lunar navigation.
Today, GNSS constellations support essential services like navigation, banking, power grid synchronization, cellular networks, and telecommunications. Near-Earth space missions use these signals in flight to determine critical operational information like location, velocity, and time.
NASA and the Italian Space Agency want to expand the boundaries of GNSS use cases. In 2019, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission broke the world record for farthest GPS signal acquisition 116,300 miles from the Earth's surface—nearly half of the 238,900 miles between Earth and the moon. Now, LuGRE could double that distance.
"GPS makes our lives safer and more viable here on Earth," said Kevin Coggins, NASA deputy associate administrator and SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "As we seek to extend humanity beyond our home planet, LuGRE should confirm that this extraordinary technology can do the same for us on the moon."
Reliable space communication and navigation systems play a vital role in all NASA missions, providing crucial connections from space to Earth for crewed and uncrewed missions alike. Using a blend of government and commercial assets, NASA's Near Space and Deep Space Networks support science, technology demonstrations, and human spaceflight missions across the solar system.
"This mission is more than a technological milestone," said Joel Parker, policy lead for positioning, navigation, and timing at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
"We want to enable more and better missions to the moon for the benefit of everyone, and we want to do it together with our international partners."
The data-gathering LuGRE payload combines NASA-led systems engineering and mission management with receiver software and hardware developed by the Italian Space Agency and their industry partner Qascom—the first Italian-built hardware to operate on the lunar surface.
Any data LuGRE collects is intended to open the door for use of GNSS to all lunar missions, not just those by NASA or the Italian Space Agency. Approximately six months after LuGRE completes its operations, the agencies will release its mission data to broaden public and commercial access to lunar GNSS research.
"A project like LuGRE isn't about NASA alone," said NASA Goddard navigation and mission design engineer Lauren Konitzer. "It's something we're doing for the benefit of humanity. We're working to prove that lunar GNSS can work, and we're sharing our discoveries with the world."
The LuGRE payload is one of 10 science experiments launching to the lunar surface on this delivery through NASA's CLPS initiative.
Through CLPS, NASA works with American companies to provide delivery and quantity contracts for commercial deliveries to further lunar exploration and the development of a sustainable lunar economy. As of 2024, the agency has 14 private partners on contract for current and future CLPS missions.
Demonstrations like LuGRE could lay the groundwork for GNSS-based navigation systems on the lunar surface. Bridging these existing systems with emerging lunar-specific navigation solutions has the potential to define how all spacecraft navigate lunar terrain in the Artemis era.
The payload is a collaborative effort between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the Italian Space Agency.

How is AI transforming the recruitment process in 2025?

Picture this: You're sipping your morning coffee, scrolling through job applications, and within minutes, you've identified the top 10 candidates from a pool of 500 resumes. Sounds like magic?
Welcome to 2025, where artificial intelligence has turned this fantasy into everyday reality for recruiters worldwide. The hiring landscape has shifted dramatically, and if you're still manually sorting through CVs, you might as well be using a typewriter in the smartphone era.
The Smart Screening Revolution
Gone are the days when HR teams spent countless hours reading through every single resume. Modern AI resume screening software has become the ultimate hiring assistant, analyzing candidate profiles with superhuman speed and accuracy.
These intelligent systems can evaluate skills, experience, and cultural fit within seconds, transforming what used to be a week-long process into a matter of hours.
The technology doesn't just scan for keywords anymore. Today's advanced algorithms understand context, recognize transferable skills, and even assess personality traits through language patterns.
It's like having a seasoned recruiter with photographic memory working 24/7.
Beyond the Buzzwords: Real Impact
The transformation goes deeper than just faster screening. AI is fundamentally changing how companies approach talent acquisition.
Predictive analytics now help organizations forecast which candidates are most likely to succeed in specific roles, reducing turnover rates by up to 40%.
Video interview analysis has evolved too. AI systems can now evaluate communication skills, confidence levels, and even detect potential red flags through facial expressions and speech patterns. While this might sound like science fiction, it's happening right now in major corporations across the globe.
The Bias-Busting Game Changer
One of the most significant advantages of AI in recruitment is its potential to reduce unconscious bias. Traditional hiring often falls victim to human prejudices based on names, photos, or educational backgrounds.
Smart recruitment tools focus purely on skills and qualifications, creating a more level playing field for all candidates.
However, it's worth noting that AI systems are only as unbiased as the data they're trained on.
Forward-thinking companies are actively working to ensure their algorithms promote diversity rather than perpetuate existing inequalities.
The Numbers Game: Efficiency Meets Precision
The statistics speak volumes about AI's impact on modern recruitment. Companies using intelligent hiring solutions report 50% faster time-to-hire and 60% improvement in candidate quality.
The applicant tracking system has evolved from a simple database to a sophisticated decision-making partner.
Natural language processing (NLP) has revolutionized how these systems understand resumes and job descriptions.
Instead of rigid keyword matching, modern platforms can interpret meaning, context, and even industry-specific jargon.
This advancement means better matches between candidates and positions.
The Human Touch in an AI World
Despite all this technological advancement, the human element remains irreplaceable.
AI handles the heavy lifting of initial screening and data analysis, but final hiring decisions still require human judgment, emotional intelligence, and cultural assessment.
The most successful companies in 2025 are those that have found the perfect balance between AI efficiency and human insight.
They use technology to eliminate tedious tasks while preserving the personal connection that makes great hiring decisions.
Looking Ahead: What's Next?
As we move further into 2025, expect to see even more sophisticated AI features. Real-time skills assessment, virtual reality job simulations, and AI-powered salary negotiations are already being tested by innovative companies.
Platforms like Scan2hire are leading this transformation, offering comprehensive solutions that streamline the entire recruitment process.
From initial resume parsing to final candidate ranking, these tools are setting new standards for what's possible in talent acquisition.
The future belongs to organizations that embrace these technological advances while maintaining their commitment to fair, human-centered hiring practices.
Those who adapt quickly will gain a significant competitive advantage in attracting top talent.
The Bottom Line
AI isn't just changing recruitment—it's revolutionizing it completely. Companies that leverage these tools effectively are finding better candidates faster, reducing costs, and creating more positive experiences for everyone involved in the hiring process.
The question isn't whether AI will transform recruitment, but how quickly your organization will adapt to this new reality.
The future of hiring is here, powered by Scan2hire and similar innovative solutions, and it's more exciting than ever.

The United States Customs and Border Protection agency confirmed on Wednesday that it uses at least one communication app made by the service TeleMessage, which creates clones of popular apps like Signal and WhatsApp with the addition of an archiving mechanism for compliance with records-retention rules.
“Following the detection of a cyber incident, CBP immediately disabled TeleMessage as a precautionary measure,” CBP spokesperson Rhonda Lawson tells WIRED. “The investigation into the scope of the breach is ongoing.”
President Donald Trump's now former national security adviser Mike Waltz was photographed last week using TeleMessage Signal during a cabinet meeting, and the photo seemed to show that he was communicating with other high-ranking officials, including Vice President JD Vance, US director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and what appears to be US secretary of state Marco Rubio.
In the days since the photo was published, TeleMessage has reportedly suffered a series of breaches that illustrate concerning security flaws. Analysis of the app's Android source code also appears to indicate fundamental flaws in the service's security scheme. As these findings emerged, TeleMessage—an Israeli company that completed an acquisition last year by the US-based company Smarsh—imposed a service pause on its products pending investigation.
“TeleMessage is investigating a potential security incident. Upon detection, we acted quickly to contain it and engaged an external cybersecurity firm to support our investigation,” a Smarsh spokesperson told WIRED in a statement on Monday. “Out of an abundance of caution, all TeleMessage services have been temporarily suspended. All other Smarsh products and services remain fully operational.”
WIRED contacted CBP about its potential use of the software after some data stolen from TeleMessage in one of the recent breaches indicated that CBP was potentially a customer.
US senator Ron Wyden called for the Department of Justice to investigate TeleMessage in a letter on Tuesday, alleging that the service is “a serious threat to US national security.” TeleMessage is a federal contractor, but the consumer apps it offers are not approved for use under the US government's Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program, or FedRAMP. In his letter, Wyden referenced that “several federal agencies” use TeleMessage, asserting that the company “sold dangerously insecure communications software to the White House and other federal agencies.”
There is still no complete public accounting of US government officials and agencies that have used the software.
